Abstract
This chapter describes the community conditions and family needs of Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees in Los Angeles. The data were drawn predominantly from in-person interviews with 50 Central and North American respondents affiliated with 13 organizations that were established after 1979 to specifically address the concerns of the incoming refugee population. Respondents were selected on the basis of their knowledge of and long-term work with the refugee communities; they included 15 Salvadorans and 6 Guatemalans who had been in the United States an average of 10.5 years.
