Abstract
The purpose of this paper is twofold: to report the development of vibrotactile technology in a new device, the Music Vibration Table (MVT™), and to review recent research literature in pain and vibration including the neurophysiological principles which together provide a conceptual model for the use of such technology. With the MVT™, precise measurement and control of music vibration can be made since the MVT™ is designed to measure frequencies and amplitudes of vibrations as they have an impact on a subject's body. This is in contrast with several commercial models of musical vibrotactile equipment which so far have been more promotional than scientific. In ongoing medical research, the MVT™ is being used with homogeneous pain populations, utilizing accepted measures of pain perception. As the MVT™ develops, many opportunities for music therapy research and clinical application seem indicated. Keywords
