Tolerance to Cereal Leaf Rusts

Abstract
Evidence that a high level of tolerance to crown rust (Puccinia coronata) exists in the oat variety Benton is presented. Two pairs of oat varieties that were essentially "isogenic" except that one member of each pair was susceptible, the other resistant. These were tested under severe rust infection conditions. The varieties Benton and Bentland constituted one such pair, Clinton 59 and Clintland the other. Loss in yield and quality of the susceptible but tolerant variety Benton were nil or small as compared with its resistant counterpart Bentland. In contrast, the loss in the susceptible but non-tolerant Clinton 59 was severe compared with its resistant counterpart. The theoretical advantage of breeding for rust tolerance instead of resistance which depends on hypersensitivity is discussed in relation to the origin of new physiologic races of rust fungi.
