Fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome

Abstract
The status of chronic fatigue syndrome remains controversial. Recent phenomenological, virological, immunological and epidemiological studies are reviewed with this issue in mind. There is considerable overlap between chronic fatigue syndrome and other psychiatric and non-psychiatric syndromes. Research has not yet firmly established any unique characteristic of chronic fatigue syndrome. A pragmatic rehabilitative approach to patient management and caution in the use of novel treatment is suggested.
