Abstract
Large doses of l-ascorbic acid (up to 5 gm./kgm. in 1 dose) are tolerated without symptoms by guinea pigs, rats or rabbits. Of 0.1 gm./kgm. ascorbic acid given subcut. to a dog, 75% was excreted in the urine during the next 9 hrs. Synthetic l-ascorbic acid behaved biologically identically with l-ascorbic acid from paprica. In doses of 40 mgm. daily (d-ascorbic acid does not cure scorbutic guinea-pigs. Of various isomerides and homologues examined only d-erythro-3-ketohexonic acid showed antiscorbutic activity.
