A Study of the Effects of Hypoglycemic Agents on Vascular Complications in Patients with Adult-onset Diabetes: VI. Supplementary Report on Nonfatal Events in Patients Treated with Tolbutamide

Abstract
A review of the development of nonfatal events was presented for patients assigned to placebo, tolbutamide, insulin standard, or insulin variable groups. The occurrence of myocardial infarctions and other vascular changes was about the same in all treatment groups even though differences in blood glucose levels were observed. Attempts to normalize blood glucose levels in the adult-onset diabetic apparently will not alter the incidence of renal impairment, retinal changes, or the other common complications of diabetes. Few patients were found to have renal or ocular disorders over the period covered by this report, and longer periods of follow-up may yield different results with respect to these vascular changes. Fewer patients in the tolbutamide treatment group than in the other 3 groups were hospitalized for cancer or died; cancer was considered the primary cause of death.
