Abstract
The leaf areas of growing bunch beans and burley tobacco was measured at weekly intervals. In 29 days (June 17 to July 14) the av. leaf area per plant of bean foliage increased from 101.1 sq. cm. to 3058 sq. cm. (3.30 sq. ft.). Burley tobacco in 37 days (July 5 to Aug. 11) increased from 2.82 sq. ft. to 22.68 sq. ft. of leaf area per plant. Calculating on the basis of 71,438 bean plants and 10,000 tobacco plants per acre of ground, the total leaf area was slightly over 5 acres for each crop. The area of the stalks and stems was not included. For insecticide applications the treatment must consider the leaf area rather than the ground area. Some crops, such as beans, have both sides of the leaves covered, thus requiring a treatment of 10 acres of foliage on one acre of ground.
