Abstract
Cows and their daughters in 27 herds in New Zealand were classified as susceptible or resistant according to whether or not . they came down with clinical mastitis before they reached 8 yrs. of age. The pooled intra-herd regression of daughter on dam for this difference was 0.19 with a standard error not far from 0.08. This is interpreted as indicating that susceptibility to mastitis has a strong genetic background. The heritability of individual differences apparently is around 38% but this has a large sampling error.
