Abstract
The medical and demographic literature contain two popular formulae for the construction of cause‐deleted life table lx values, one developed for applications in follow‐up studies and the other for cross‐sectional studies. It turns out that for both types of applications one of the two formulae is virtually always of better quality than the other. A formula developed by Keyfitz and Frauenthal5 is usually better than either.
