Gustatory Stimulant, Sunlight Protectant, Evaporation Retardant: Three Characteristics of a Microbial Insecticidal Adjuvant23

Abstract
A commercial adjuvant developed for use with microbial insecticides provided protection against inactivation of Baculovirus heliothis by sunlight, retarded evaporation of water-virus mixture, and also stimulated feeding by larvae of the bollworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie). Formulations with the adjuvant were 2–11 times more stable in simulated sunlight than those without the adjuvant. About 50% of the water was lost from a mixture of water + virus + adjuvant (20%); 80% was lost from water + virus alone. Larval feeding increased ca. 3-fold on leaflets in areas spotted with the adjuvant.
