Abstract
Hooded crows in the study area could be divided into 2 groups, one of which held territories in which they bred in the summer, and the remaining birds which did not hold territories or breed and which lived in loose flocks throughout the year. During the winter large numbers of immigrant crows entered the area and joined the flocks. Crows took a very wide range of foods. Birds in the lowland areas fed chiefly on cattle food during the winter and insects in the summer. Birds in high ground areas fed on carrion with some cattle food in the winter and on insects in the summer. A study of the fat and protein conditions of birds through the year showed that some of the birds living in the flocks were unable to find sufficient food during the winter and some died from starvation. Birds holding territories probably had sufficient food throughout the year.
