(Third of Three Parts)NGF and Disorders of the Nervous SystemIn previous sections, we have discussed the role of NGF in the life of its target cells. The ability of NGF to provoke neurite outgrowth from embryonic chick ganglions in vitro is the basis of its bioassay. A factor (or factors) is present in certain human tissues that can elicit a similar response in the bioassay and whose activity, in some instances, has been blocked by the presence of antiserum prepared against mouse NGF.
