Abstract
A collection of starch-hydrolyzing streptococci from a variety of sources (especially ruminants) was studied and the physiological reactions were considered in relation to those described for Streptococcus bovis. A method of direct isolation of starch-hydrolyzing streptococci using I2 is described. In spite of the diverse origin of specimens, fair agreement with the species definition was found: the taxonomic relationships among the starch-hydrolyzing streptococci, especially S bovis, Streptococcus inulinaceus and Streptococcus equinus are considered. The use of a test of dextran-forming ability is suggested as being of value in distinguishing between S bovis and S equinus. Keywords
