SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF LARGE STABLE QUASICRYSTALS IN THE Al-Cu-Ru SYSTEM

Abstract
We report the synthesis, the growth morphology and the characterization of stable quasicrystalline materials in the ternary Al-Cu-Ru system. Quasicrystalline materials have been prepared by melting, solid state reaction and mechanical alloying techniques. In particular, large quasicrystals (size: ~1.2 mm) with the composition Al 68 Cu 22 Ru 10 were prepared by arc melting. According to the investigations by X-rays, electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis, the observed quasicrystals are stable up to the melting point at 1014°C. The quasicrystallinity, represented here, is obviously the thermodynamically stable state.
