Abstract
A statistical analysis was carried out to determine the existence, degree and form of association between the avg. daily intake of ascorbic acid, according to the 7 day diet record, and the avg. amt. found in the blood serum or plasma. Correlation coefficients were significantly positive for 15 of 24 No. Carolina groups and a Mexican Indian group. Significant coefficients were higher when season, sex and age were all considered. Probable factors operating against closer association were inaccuracies in estimates of ascorbic acid in the drug consumer, the time lag between ingestion of the vit. and its appearance in the blood, presence of pregnant and lactating women in the groups, and initial high levels in blood and tissues. That a state of unsaturation among the No. Carolinans was associated with low intakes was demonstrated in the analyses. Keywords
