Upper bounds on lepton-number violating meson decays

Abstract

From a retroactive data analysis, we obtain the first upper bound on the ‖ΔL‖=2 kaon decay

K^{+}

→

π^{-}

μ^{+}

μ^{+}

: B(

K^{+}

→

π^{-}

μ^{+}

μ^{+}

)<1.5×

10^{- 4}

. We also discuss

K^{+}

→

π^{-}

μ^{+}

e^{+}

and ‖ΔL‖=2 decays of D and B mesons. We suggest experiments which can improve our limit and discuss the connection with direct searches for heavy neutrinos in

K_{μ 2}^{+}

decay.
