Abstract
The Coulomb distortion of nuclear transitions induced by incident pion beams is investigated in the eikonal model. Taking a phenomenological ansatz for the transition amplitude, defined in terms of that for the elastic, the pi +, pi - difference is predicted to be much smaller than for elastic scattering. This is in agreement with measurements on the first 2+ excitation in 12C in the resonance region. Keywords
