A STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF MODIFICATIONS OF THE CULTURE MEDIUM UPON LENGTH OF LIFE AND FECUNDITY IN A ROTIFER,PROALES SORDIDA, WITH SPECIAL RELATION TO THEIR HERITABILITY

Abstract
In unfavorable culture media, the rotifers, multiplying by parthenogenesis become depressed, declining in vitality in successive generations, as do the Ciliate Protozoa; they show much lowered fecundity and longevity. Under some conditions this decline is cumulative, ending in final death of the lines of descent. In contrast to the Protozoa, the rotifers when brought back to a favorable medium at once recover their normal fecundity and longevity.
