Interpretation of a double hypernucleus event

Abstract
Arguments are put forward to suggest that a double hypernucleus event, recently reported by Aoki et al. as either BeΛΛ10 or BΛΛ13, should be interpreted as BΛΛ13. It is proposed that the formation of BΛΛ13 occurs sequentially via an intermediate excited state of CΛΛ14, which decays by proton emission: Ξ+N14n+C*ΛΛ14, C*ΛΛ14p+BΛΛ13. Moreover, it is shown that particular excited states are favored in the Ξ hyperon capture process. The binding energy of the two Λ hyperons in BΛΛ13 is BΛΛ=27.5±0.7 MeV, corresponding to an attractive sΛ2 matrix element ΔBΛΛ=4.8±0.7 MeV, in good agreement with values of ΔBΛΛ obtained from previous events.
