The Effects of Nitroacta (Urea formaldehyde) on the Survival and Growth ofPinus elliottii

Abstract
A pot trial testing the effect of no nitrogen, one level of urea and three levels of urea formaldehyde (Nitroacta) on the survival and growth of Pinus elliottii Engelm. is described. Survival, shoot increment, root/shoot ratio and mycorrhizal infection were adversely affected by the addition of nitrogen, either as urea or as urea formaldehyde. Differences between nitrogen source were not significant. Chemical analyses of the foliage showed that there was ample phosphate for normal growth in the plants which did not receive N. It is concluded that the nitrogen requirement of P. elliottii in early life is very low and that nitrogen fertiliser should not be applied at planting.
