Abstract
The paper represents an analysis of the characteristic properties of spontaneously excited irregu-lar striations observed in the positive column of a glow discharge. Comparisions with the properties of coherent, externally excited, growing ionization waves lead to the conclusion that irregular stria-tions are random ionization waves. Assuming that random striations originate at the cathode end of the positive column, their frequency spectrum can be approximately explained from a knowledge of the dispersion relation of ionization waves. The nonlinear properties of random striations remain to be explained
