Abstract
A statewide load managenent system is currently being installed in North Carolina. To accommodate the differing needs of al operating util ities, a hierarchical system is being built. At a central computer system, the operator wi run a set of prograns to choose the optimal times for performing load control. Commands wil be sent to 27 individual rural cooperatives to control load using ind iv idual control strategies. A VHF radio system broadcasts load control commiands to consumers' residences, while a UHF radio system carries load data back to the inditvidual control centers. This system is designed to reduce peak demands and thereby generate substantial savings on the power bills. Keywords
