Abstract
A phase-change optical disk designed for use at 830 nm wavelength was examined for differences in recording and erasing characteristics at wavelengths of 830 nm and 680 nm. The saturated carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N) was more than 50 dB. The saturated erasability was near 30 dB. The laser spot is smaller at shorter wavelength. However, there was no marked difference depending on the laser spot size. This indicates that phase-change optical disks have good exchangeability regardless of the laser wavelength. Keywords
