Abstract
This article argues that there is an inextricable link between scholarly productivity and instructional quality. However, in Speech there are few active scholars and unwise policy decisions about instructional practices have relegated the discipline to second or third class status at most institutions. An eleven‐point plan to separate departments who wish to participate in an emerging discipline of communication is offered. Implications of divorcing Speech from the discipline of communication are discussed. Keywords
