Enzymatic degradation of chondromucoprotein by cell‐free extracts of human cartilage

Abstract
Normal and fibrillated human articular cartilage contains significant levels of an agent which reduces the viscosity of cartilage protein‐polysaccharides. This agent is cyanide and heat sensitive and has typical enzyme behavior. It splits the mucoprotein at or near the P‐P bond. This enzyme may initiate the degradation of ground substance seen in early osteoarthritis.
