Abstract
We have studied the collisional loss rates for very cold cesium atoms held in a spontaneous-force optical trap. In contrast with previous work, we find that collisions involving excitation by the trapping light fields are the dominant loss mechanism. We also find that hyperfine changing collisions between atoms in the ground state can be significant under some circumstances. Keywords
