The Shape of the Interstellar Reddening Curve

Abstract
Spectral intensity distributions measured by Oke and Willstrop for four O stars have been compared with those from model atmosphere computations. The mean interstellar reddening curve derived shows a pronounced discontinuity of slope near 4 445 Å of the same size as that found by Nandy. The model represents closely the spectrum of a type near O9 in the range 4 000–6 000 Å. Only the stars ζ Ophiuchi and Orionis have been observed in the ultraviolet and they are found to be considerably brighter in the Balmer and Paschen continua than predicted by the model. Computed values of continuous spectral intensity are given for the wave-length range 2 000 Å to 12 213 Å for five models which correspond to spectral types from O9 to B2.
