Abstract
The chief credit for the description of the disease known as kwashiorkor belongs to Dr. Cicely D. Williams.1*Like many other diseases, it had been described earlier, first, it would appear, by Czerny and Keller, in 1906 in Germany. They observed the condition, which they calledMehlnährschaden, in young children and ascribed it to excessive carbohydrate in the diet. A number of other descriptions followed, notably by Proctor, in 1927, who described a condition in young children manifested by slimy diarrhea, swelling of the feet, and a curious black desquamation of the skin; by Lieurade, in 1932, who observed it in West Africa, and by a number of other observers whose descriptions, however, are not always sufficiently detailed to permit one to say that the condition in question was or was not kwashiorkor.
