The Genus Neoschongastia (Acarinida: Trombiculidae) in the Western Pacific Area

Abstract
17 spp. from the Western Pacific Area are discussed. In the larval stage they are all parasitic on birds. One or more species were collected on Bougainville, Iwo Jima, Samar, Guam, Ulithi, Peleliu, and Okinawa. 11 of the 17 larvae were found to be new: N. riversi, N. carveri, N. bougainvillensis, N. strong!, N. monticola, N. posekanyi, N. egretta, N. atollensis, N. nanirui, N. pauensis, and N. ewingi. N. americana ssp. solomonis was also named. Specimens of N. yeomansi, N. backhousei and N. retrocincta were studied, but no specimens of N. dubia or N. gallinarum were available. Two nymphs (N. carveri and N. sp.) were described. The genus is redefined on the basis of both larval and nymphal characteristics. A key to the larvae known from the area is included. The type specimens are in the U. S. National Museum. Other specimens are in the U. S. National Museum and the South Australian Museum, Adelaide.
