Abstract
It is clear that the proportion of old people in Western Europe will increase considerably in the future. In this paper the author considers some of the effects which this process is likely to have on Western Society. As the old must be provided for by social security schemes, which are ultimately financed by the working population, the burden on the producer is likely to increase and may become so heavy that it will be resented and evaded. Some possible remedies are discussed, including postponement of the retiring age, and the immigration of workers from Mediterranean countries and possibly from outside Europe. The future of migration movements in Britain is also considered.
