AFTER-IMAGERY IN DEFECTIVE FIELDS OF VISION

Abstract
A patient with irregular left homonymous henianopia due to occipital lobe infarcts was studied. Binocular fixation of red and green geometric patterns 30 cm. distant under desk lamp or daylight illumination for 60 sec. was followed by fixation of a cross on a white field. Negative after-images, appearing immediately or within a few secs., were greater then the previously seen pattern. Stimulus size and configuration, among other factors, affected the degree of "completion" of after-images in scotomatous areas, where they showed a consistent instability in latency, intensity and duration not evident in perceived areas.
