Abstract
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters constitute one of the biggest and most conserved protein families in the evolutionary scale. Many of them are of enormous clinical relevance, due to their relationship with genetic diseases and drug resistance during the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases. Leishmaniasis is a major and globally widespread group of parasitic diseases, whose treatment has been complicated by the expansion of resistance to conventional drugs. Here, we review the current knowledge about ABC transporters in Leishmania spp, with special attention to their relationship with the drug-resistance phenotype. Keywords
