Community Survey for Uterine Cancer

Abstract
The study is concerned with a statistical analysis of a self sustained community cytology survey for uterine cancer. Cell studies of 48,697 women were performed. 30.4% of the Mecklenburg County white female population, 21 years and over, were examined in one year. The prevalence of uterine cancer in this series was 0.89%; that of clinically unsuspected carcinoma was 0.56%. 67.1% of the total number of carcinomas of the cervix were in-situ, 28.2% were infiltrating carcinomas. The peak prevalence of infiltrating carcinomas was between the ages of 51 and 60; that of carcinoma in-situ between the ages of 31 and 50; that of marked epithelial atypicalities between the ages of 21 and 30. Emphasis is placed upon uniformity of the method of compilation of statistical data for the purpose of comparing the efficiency and accuracy of similar projects. A basic pattern of tabulation is suggested which includes the important group of "borderline" cases both from a cytologic and pathologic point of view, which, heretofore have been neglected.
