Note on the pituitary and an anorexigenic material isolated from urine

Abstract
The anorexigenic action and the excretion of FMSIA isolated from rat urine were investigated with intact and hypophysectomized male rats of the Wistar strain. The anorexigenic material was excreted by hypophysectomized rats in both the fasted and fed states, demonstrating that the pituitary is not required for the production of FMSIA. Further, FMSIA exhibited anorexigenic activity when administered to hypophysectomized rats. Anorexigenic activity was demonstrated in bovine posterior pituitary powder and by vasopressin in an amount equal to that contained in the powder. There was no evidence of an antidiuretic effect of FMSIA in intact and in hypophysectomized rats; it caused a reduction of both water intake and urine volume accompanying the decrease of food intake.
