Abstract
The transmission characteristics of cylindrical plate electrostatic analyzers are derived by applying the results of a previous study on the spherical plate analyzer. A transmission matrix is derived for the cylindrical analyzer; coordinates of the matrix are energy and angle of incidence, and the elements are percentage transmission for broad beams of particles. Comparison with a spherical analyzer shows that resolutions (full width half maximum angular and energy responses) are not much different, although peak transmissions are greater by almost 40% for the spherical analyzer. Angle and energy response functions are asymmetric for the cylindrical analyzer; in particular, this analyzer has a long high energy tail. Energy‐angle factors are calculated from transmission matrices and are essentially identical for the two species of analyzer. Keywords
