X-Ray K-Absorption Edge of Yttrium in Some Yttrium Compounds

Abstract
The x‐ray K‐absorption edge position and the extended structure of yttrium in several compounds have been investigated using 400‐mm bent‐crystal (mica) spectrograph. The absorption edge position and the extended structure for Y3 + in dilute aqueous solutions of several salts have been found to be identical indicating that Y3 + ions absorb as if they are in vacuum. The absorption edge position for the Y3 + ion in a solution has been taken as a reference with which the edge position for Y3 + ions in different compounds is compared. The shift of the absorption edge towards the lower‐frequency side seems to be related to the covalency. If the near neighbors are unchanged, a change in the distant neighbors does not affect the absorption edge position appreciably.
