Abstract
To the Editor.— In a study from this institution, Katz1 reported that three subjects of nine tested with an alcoholic solution of padimate (isoamyl-p-N, N-dimethyl aminobenzoate; Escalol 506) responded with a reaction which we had not seen before with other sunscreens. Fifteen minutes after the solution had been applied to previously protected bathing-trunk area skin, the subjects were exposed to clear noonday Florida sun. Within 15 minutes, the areas where the padimate had been applied, but no others, became bright red and uncomfortable. The only cutaneous response like it that I have seen before is at the site of a patch test to crude coal tar preparations which is then exposed to noonday Florida sun. Here, too, even though the tar preparation is first washed off, the sun can cause burning and redness within minutes. The subjects observed by Katz were residents in dermatology, and I saw
