Abstract
Summary: Secondary disaccharide intolerance was a feature of the gastroenteritis in all cases and lasted from 2‐10 weeks, necessitating treatment with a disaccharide‐free milk. No bacterial or viral pathogens were isolated from the 5 affected infants, and all infants in whom disaccharide intolerance was recognised, survived. Lactose tolerance tests in the recovery phase were helpful in deciding when to reintroduce a normal (lactose containing) milk. Keywords
