Abstract
For free boundary conditions a shear layer with linear velocity profile supports irrotational disturbances, one mode being unstable when its wavelength λ≳2.619 times the thickness h of the shear layer. For long wavelengths the dispersion relation of the mode approaches the Kelvin–Helmholtz form. Keywords
