The relationship of serpentine and related floras to laterite and bedrock type at North Cape, Northernmost New Zealand

Abstract
Seven facies of laterites and related soil types are developed above serpentinites, gabbros, and basalts at North Cape and support four major floral communities. Fire history and topographical considerations as much as soil and bedrock type control the distribution of these communities. A distinctive flora has developed above some of the serpentinite-derived laterites, but this community does not possess many of the characters generally regarded as typical of serpentine flora.
