Abstract
Having investigated the possibility of establishing an information system on the application of radiation in medicine in the Netherlands, a system proposed based mainly on a combination of data from currently available registries and surveys. In general, information at institutional level is incomplete due to lack of data in the registries or to limited surveying. Numbers lacking must then be estimated to obtain the national overview. After studying which institution-related quantity correlates best with the number of conventional X ray, CT and nuclear medicine examinations, the number of admissions per hospital was found to be the most indicative of the number of diagnostic examinations using ionising radiation. The uncertainties in the national estimates for the number of examinations are significantly reduced if separate extrapolations are made for the general, university and specialised hospitals. Keywords
