A double-blind trial of flurbiprofen in the treatment of rheumatoid disease

Abstract
SummaryA multi-centre, double-blind controlled trial comparing the efficacy of 120 mg. flurbiprofen daily with 2.0 g. aspirin daily was carried out over a 4-week period in 179 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Twenty-seven patients (18 on aspirin, 9 on flurbiprofen)were withdrawn because of side-effects.Clinical assessments and patients' and physicians' overall evaluation of improvement showed that both drugs were effective but, although flurbiprofen proved superior to aspirin in all but one parameter (reduction of the E.S.R.), the differences were not statistically signifcant. Gastro-intestinal side-effects were fewer with flurbiprofen.
