Abstract
The rotatory dispersion (RD) and ultraviolet absorption of some α-hydroxy-carboxylic acids and their nitrates have been measured and analyzed. A distinct relation has been found between the configuration and the sign of the Cotton effect; namely, nitrates of α-d-hydroxy-carboxylic acids (R-configuration) show positive Cotton effects, while those of α-l-hydroxy-carboxylie acids (S-configuration) show negative Cotton effects. Thus a rotatory contribution by the nitrates of the α-hydroxyl group has been suggested, though it is opposite in sign to the xanthates of the α-hydroxy-carboxylic acids. This publication has 12 references indexed in Scilit:
