Abstract
In data from a national sample of middle-aged respondents it was found that people's inclination to call themselves retired is related, in order of decreasing strength, to labor force, receipt of Social Security benefits, work-preventive physical disability, self-perceived health status, health-related work limitation, healthrelated mobility limitation, age, education, marital status, and sex. Prediction equations using labor force and Social Security benefit receipt correctly anticipated subjective retirement status of 92% of the men and 75% of the women. Keywords
