Submucosal Arterial Malformation of the Stomach as a Cause of Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Abstract
Three cases of fatal gastrointestinal bleeding from submucosal gastric arteries are reported. The affected vessels were unusually large arteries with a prominent muscular media. In the point of rupture a superficial peptic erosion was seen. Thirty-four previously described cases were reviewed and most lesions were localized up to 10 cm distal to the cardio-esophageal junction. The knowledge of the site of bleeding is important for surgical management.
