Abstract
The “living creature” image in Plato's PHAEDRUS has typically been interpreted either as formalized schema of DISPOSITO or as a declaration in behalf of “organic unity” of rhetorical and literary composition. In this article, it is argued that both of these interpretations are inconsistent with major aspects of Platonic philosophy and rhetorical theory. An alternative interpretation of the image is presented. Keywords
