Aspects of Prostaglandin Function in the Lung

Abstract
The functions of the lung can be divided into those directly involved with respiration and those that, although perhaps having a secondary effect on respiration, are not its primary concern. It has been recognized that these functions are influenced by several classes of substances, including autacoids, catecholamines and steroids. The purpose of this report is to review the effects of one autacoid, the prostaglandins (PG's), on both respiratory and nonrespiratory functions of the lung.PG's, a group of 20-carbon unsaturated fatty acids, were discovered by von Euler1 and Goldblatt2 almost half a century ago.
