Abstract
An additional case of intramural esophageal diverticulosis is reported which demonstrates again the multiple, minute, narrow-necked outpouchings in a patient with dysphagia. In this case, the first to be biopsied, active esophageal moniliasis was documented. Although the esophagoscopic appearance of the mucosa in previous cases did not suggest active inflammation, fluoroscopically observed hypertonicity suggested it, and a relationship to inflammatory disease had been postulated. It was speculated that inflammation and fibrosis might widen normally occurring neurovascular gaps in the muscularis, or cause dilatation of submucosal glands. The reported case demonstrates an association with inflammation, but does not define the specific morphology of the outpouching. The possibility of a causal relationship between moniliasis and intramural esophageal diverticulosis exists as an intriguing hypothesis to be tested by subsequent experience. Keywords
