Abstract
A Fokker–Planck equation has been derived for a system of particles that can exist in several quantum states, that can react, and that can interact with time-dependent fields. A generalized Smoluchowski equation can be deduced in which the potential of mean force can be time dependent. The description of chemical reactivity in terms of optical potentials is replaced by a set of radiation boundary conditions if a suitable limiting procedure is used. As an example, the special case is considered of the diffusion-controlled reaction of two particles in the presence of an electromagnetic field strong enough to influence the course of the reaction. Keywords
