Abstract
The spinal tap may not only be useless in a particular case but dangerous; on the other hand, when the indications for it are clear-cut it should not be omitted for fear of the risks. Once the decision for the examination has been made, the physician must insist on careful performance and recording of the data it provides. And he must remember that its results dictate neither a diagnosis nor a course of treatment.
